Rubble and Relics
By: Jon Young
When I was a boy I’d spend my days
at my favorite record store and the local arcade.
Kids these days just don’t give a damn
about anything outside the little screen in their hands.
I miss back when whole albums were good,
When my heroes stood for something
and we marked where they stood.
It’s hard to sit by and watch it wither away,
but god they’re bulldozing my memories
almost every day.
Chorus:
They’re turning us into Rubble and Relics.
We bought what they were selling
and now they’re selling us too.
We’re just black and red
in charts of loss and profit.
Out with the old and in with the new
Make way for the chosen,
Save a Relic or two.
Verse 2:
The Arcade burned in the spring of 89,
and the record shop went under
when the chain stores arrived.
Nobody wept when they met with their end.
But a few of us remember
just how cool it had been.
I miss the days when we’d sneak out to shows.
Singing songs of teenage fury just to piss off our folks.
Now I look at the world and all that I see,
are the cold eyes of a future
Inside a machine.
Chorus:
They’re turning us into Rubble and Relics.
We bought what they were selling
and now they’re selling us too.
We’re just black and red
in charts of loss and profit.
Out with the old and in with the new.
Make way for the chosen,
Save a Relic or two.
Forged in Flame
By: Jon Young
The city’s quiet when the streets are cold.
Look at all the people wearing headphones.
In their own world.
The bums and the drunks with their backs to the wall,
wait for gifts from the bleeding hearts.
They don’t speak at all.
And like rats in a maze we walk single file
to the slow and steady pace of a turnstile.
Got somewhere to go.
Chasing city glow.
Chorus:
How did we get this way?
So numb to the sounds of the modern age.
We were forged in flame.
Verse 2:
Fifty story buildings,
Every day they’re building more.
There’s so many here among us,
I can’t see the stars.
What a monument to excessiveness.
But there’s love left in this city, I know I’m not alone.
Let the music dance around us, come and save our souls.
Feel the beat again.
Hearts in unison…
Chorus:
How did we get this way?
So numb to the sounds of the modern age.
We were forged in flame.
Killing Kind
By: Jon Young and Brandon Adams
I was just a kid when my mom dropped the bomb
that daddy was gone, he wasn’t coming home
He’d been bumming round in Reno, he was a gambling fool
Till his luck ran out, he had to book it south,
he was running from the law and the wrath of the town,
for the murder of a woman that he just barely knew…
Chorus:
Cause love was never easy for the killing kind
With blood on your hands and blood on my mind.
Like a river flowing through us,
I’m drowning in it too
It’s déjà vu.
Ten years later I’m a man myself,
My daddy met his end in a cheap hotel.
Shot down by the sheriff looking for something to prove.
And like father like son, I have lived by the gun,
Blazed a trail of blood and glory through this world I am from.
Just another in a cycle, I really didn’t choose…
Chorus:
Cause love was never easy for the killing kind
With blood on your hands and blood on my mind.
Like a river flowing through us,
I’m drowning in it too
It’s déjà vu.
Jake the Drifter
By: Jon Young
Jake, he was a drifter, he left home in 42.
He was seeking fame in the novel game, he set out to write a few.
But the world had bad intentions and poor jake did but abide,
until the whiskey and bad women have left a darkness in his eyes.
And it's been three weeks since he's written,
He often wonders what he'd do
if all the fiction he's been living ever came to be the truth.
Chorus:
Don't judge him for leaving a life that you won't let go
Come on, come on, yeah
He had to justify his feelings
Before the devil lays claim to his worn out gypsy soul
He'll Go
And Jake's the prime example of a story we've all heard,
Never judge a book by it's cover, but damn sure take it for it's word.
And though he may seem so defeated,
he's steady in his resolve.
He's gonna chase his dreams through the steep ravines
of the mountain we call life.
Chorus:
Don't judge him for needing to find a little peace in his soul
Come on, Come on, yeah
He had to justify these feelings
Before the devil lays claim to his worn out Gypsy soul
He'll Go
Don't judge him for leaving a life that you won't let go
Come on, come on, yeah
He had to justify his feelings
Before the devil lays claim to his worn out gypsy soul
He'll Go
Leap of Faith
By Jon Young
I've dreamed of life untethered from this sinking ship I'm on,
Living right where I belong
Next to you.
Oh darling let's invest in a little happiness
and leave behind the rest and start anew..
Chorus:
Cause I'll be there for you, If you want me to.
Let's leave it all behind and get away..
And If you want me to,
I can carry you
until all of our tomorrows are today.
Oh our life is but a journey,
what you say we go and take a leap of faith?
Let's throw out all the maps,
and slip into the cracks.
America you are my strangest friend.
Cause what the hell's a mortgage worth
when you're six feet in the dirt?
Life is more than work.
Live it true.
Chorus:
Cause I'll be there for you, If you want me to.
Let's leave it all behind and get away..
And If you want me to,
I can carry you
until all of our tomorrows are today.
Oh our life is but a journey,
what you say we go and take a leap of faith?
Oh the Things I Have Seen
By Jon Young
I've stood tall on the top of a mountain
I've sailed through dark endless seas.
I've been 2000 miles for the love of a woman.
Oh the things I have seen.
Verse 2:
I've driven cattle into the heart of a sunset.
I've known the silence of being alone.
And it's simpler I think,
to just pick and drink.
Oh the things I have seen
Chorus:
And it's easy to not be excited
when your world comes hammering down.
Take shelter my friend,
this isn't the end.
Oh the things I have seen
Verse 3:
I saw my newborn in the arms of his mother.
I saw the love in her eyes as he cooed.
Still she worries now and then
For someday he'll be a man.
Oh the things I have seen
Chorus:
And it's easy to not be excited
When your world comes hammering down.
Take shelter my friend,
This isn't the end.
Oh the things I have seen.
Verse 4:
I saw an old man in the mirror this morning.
His face was as cold as stone.
Oh How can this be?
That old man is me.
Oh the things I have seen
Chorus:
And it's easy to not be excited
When your world comes hammering down
Take shelter my friend.
This isn't the end.
Oh the things I have seen.
Foolish Love
By: Jon Young
She met him back in high school
They were just a couple of kids
Playing house on the weekends
While her daddy drove a rig.
It was love
Foolish love
Sweet sixteen was awful bitter
With a baby on the way
But he told her that he loved her
And he married her that day
So she settled down to her routine
Of a mom, a maid, a wife
As the days pass on she wonders
“Is this really her new life?”
He started out with good intentions;
he went to find a job.
But the oilfield wasn’t hiring
and in this town that’s all he’s got.
So he started drinking heavy
just to try and ease the pain,
But the whiskey makes his fists burn
at the mention of her name.
Damned, he could have been a pilot,
he could have flown around the world
If he’d never fell in love with that little Texas Girl.
Resentment turns to anger and anger turns to rage.
As his truck pulls in the driveway,
she’s scared to let him in.
It was love, Foolish love
It was love, Foolish love
She often thinks of leaving
but she knows she wont get far
With three kids in the back seat
and some maxed out credit cards.
She hopes someday she’ll change him
And he’ll be the way he was
Back when they were both still innocent
Back when they were still in love.
The moral of the story is as sad as it is true,
Never give your heart to anything
You can’t afford to lose.
Cause making love is easy,
It’s the living that gets hard
She hangs on for the children
For them she’ll bare the scars of love.
Foolish love.
It was love, Foolish love.
